This is the slotted round lock nut that sets and holds bearing preload on a HanDe front steer knuckle. The four slots around the rim are cut for a hook spanner, and the fine internal thread runs right through the nut so it can be adjusted in small steps and then locked with the retainer.

**Why they get replaced.** The slots are the first thing to suffer: a nut that has been knocked round with a chisel and hammer loses its clean edges and can no longer be set accurately, and the thread stretches once it has been torqued and released a few times. A knuckle rebuild that reuses the old nut usually ends up with the preload slightly off — the driver notices it as steering shimmy at 60–80 km/h, vague wander on the highway, a click at full lock, or feathered front tyre wear. On inspection the knuckle shows end play with the wheel jacked up.
**Fitting notes.**
1. Clean the thread on the knuckle and the nut — grit in a fine thread gives a false torque reading.
2. Oil the thread lightly, then torque to the axle manufacturer’s figure for your model.
3. Align the slot with the retainer or lock plate by turning further in, never by backing the nut off.
4. Re-check knuckle play after the first 500 km, and again at the next service.
