## What a VCU actually does — and why the truck stops dead

The vehicle control unit (VCU) is the decision computer of the electric driveline. It reads the key, pedal, gear and brake signals, turns the driver’s request into a torque demand, sequences the high-voltage contactors (pre-charge, then main), manages energy between the pack and the auxiliaries, keeps the CAN network talking to the motor controller, BMS, TCU and multi-in-one controller, and runs the diagnostics and limp-home strategy.

That is why a dead VCU rarely shows up as “the truck drives badly”. It shows up as a truck that will not come alive: no HV ready, no throttle response, or a permanent limp.

## Two numbers on one unit — read both before ordering

| Where | What is printed |
|—|—|
| White plate | China National Heavy Duty Truck Group Co., Ltd. (SINOTRUK), Vehicle Control Unit (VCU), Type **ZZEV-30B**, −40 °C to 85 °C, Made in China |
| Laser etched on the housing | **AZ621163000022** · 90000 · 250903046000 |
| OEM PARTS label with barcode | **AZ621163000021/2** · 4501456252202509040001 |

The laser number ends in **022**, the label number ends in **021/2** — both are on the same factory unit, so do not read the difference as a mistake. If you are ordering from a parts list, send us a photo of both markings (or just your VIN) and we will confirm against the unit we ship.

## The type code is the part that bites

**ZZEV-30B** is the VCU type SINOTRUK lists for its new-energy trucks in its own environmental disclosure. **ZZEV-30B-S** is a separate variant with its own calibration. Same housing, same connector layout, different software — do not swap one for the other because the plug fits.

## Software and configuration

A VCU is flashed and parametrised per vehicle build: model variant, axle ratio, battery pack type, retarder setting, EBS/ABS configuration, speed limiter. Two units that look identical can behave completely differently on the truck.

– Send the truck model, VIN, and if possible the software/version read out of the old unit with a diagnostic tool.
– If a replacement has to be flashed, it needs the OEM diagnostic tool and the correct files. We would rather flag that before shipping than have you find out at the workshop.

## Failure symptoms that point at the VCU

| Symptom | What it usually means |
|—|—|
| Key on, dash stays dark, no wake-up | VCU not powering up or not waking the network |
| No HV ready, contactors never close | pre-charge or contactor control not commanded |
| Throttle dead, idle only | pedal signal path or torque request not issued |
| Limp home with no fault stored in the motor controller | fault is upstream, on the VCU side |
| CAN dropouts over bumps or after heat soak | connector pins or an internal solder joint |
| Charging refuses to start | VCU sits in the charge handshake — check it before blaming the charger |

## Fitting notes

1. **High voltage first.** Power down, pull the service switch, wait for the capacitors to discharge per your workshop procedure, verify dead, insulated gloves on.
2. **Do not over-torque the mounting bolts.** The housing is die-cast with mounting bosses; a cracked boss lets water in, and water is what kills these units.
3. **Leave the breather alone.** The Voir SKS membrane on top is a pressure-equalising vent. Never block it, never point a pressure washer at it, never clean it with solvent. A blocked vent pushes moisture past the seals instead.
4. **Connectors at the bottom:** release the secondary lock, pull straight out, never lever against the housing. Inspect the pins for green corrosion before you plug the new unit in — corroded pins will take the new VCU out just as fast.
5. **After fitting:** clear the codes, confirm CAN communication with the motor controller, BMS and multi-in-one controller, then run a standing pre-charge test before a road test.
6. **Find the cause if the old one died twice.** Water ingress, a chafed loom or a voltage spike from a failing DC/DC will kill the third unit too.

## Fitment

SINOTRUK new-energy trucks — the HOWO TX EV and Sitrak EV platforms, where ZZEV-30B is the listed VCU type. Fitment follows the type code and part number, and we confirm every order against the VIN or a photo of the old plate before dispatch.

## Ordering

Minimum order 1 piece. Stock leaves in 2-3 working days with photos of the actual unit and the packing before dispatch, then the tracking number. Air express for urgent orders, sea or rail for volume.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is AZ621163000021/2 the same as AZ621163000022?

Both appear on the same factory unit: AZ621163000021/2 on the OEM label with the barcode, AZ621163000022 laser etched on the housing. They differ in the last digit. Send a photo of both markings or your VIN and we will confirm the match.

What does the type code ZZEV-30B mean?

It is the SINOTRUK VCU type used on their new-energy trucks. ZZEV-30B-S is a separate variant with a different calibration — the connectors are the same, the software is not, so they are not interchangeable.

Does the replacement need programming?

It can. The VCU is flashed and parametrised per vehicle build (variant, axle ratio, pack type, EBS configuration, speed limiter). Give us the model, VIN and the software version from the old unit, and we will tell you before shipping whether a flash is needed.

Which trucks does it fit?

SINOTRUK new-energy trucks on the HOWO TX EV and Sitrak EV platforms, where ZZEV-30B is the listed control unit. We confirm every order against VIN or the old plate.

Why do these units fail?

Most often water: a blocked or damaged breather vent, a cracked mounting boss, or a pressure washer aimed at the housing. After that, connector pin corrosion and voltage spikes from a failing DC/DC. Fix the cause or the replacement will not last.

Can I fit it myself?

Physically yes, but the high-voltage side has to be isolated and verified dead first, and the unit needs a CAN communication check and a pre-charge test afterwards. If you do not have the diagnostic tool, have the workshop fit it.
